Mt. Misen, the highest peak on Miyajima at 535 meters above sea level, is known as a holy mountain.

Since Kukai, posthumously known as Kobo Daishi, built a training site on Mr. Misen in 806, the mountain has attracted devoted worshippers, including Taira-no-Kiyomori and Ito Hirobumi, and a number of legends remain. In 1996, along with Itsukushima Shrine, Mt. Misen was designated a World Cultural Heritage site. Gigantic rocks dotting the landscape and historical sites have created magnificent scenery.
